However carefully food is selected and combined many essential elements may be lacking in these days of grow­ing foods in devitalized or poisoned land and the ever ­increasing tendency towards processing and fragmenta­tion.

Unless food supplements are taken regularly serious dietary deficiencies may result and these can play a large part in the onset of illnesses such as rheumatism and arthritis.

However, it should be noted that the chemical substi­tutes obtainable from the chemists bear no relationship to the real thing.

For instance, their so-called vitamin C is a substance called ascorbic acid, quite unlike the vitamin C obtainable from the health stores which is derived from rose hips or other naturally growing plants.

It has not yet been established exactly how many vit­amins there are but a great deal has been discovered about them.
