Potassium
Potassium is a mineral of great importance to those suffering from arthritis, since it is an anti-calcification factor and. will help to prevent calcium from settling in and stiffening up the joints.
This calcification can be caused by a deficiency of either calcium or potassium. Foods rich in potassium are: most green leafy vegetables, celery, wheat germ, kelp, sesame seeds, figs, dark brown sugar (not the dyed variety!), and molasses.

Calcium
Calcium is most essential for every cell of the body, parÂticularly for the muscles.
A deficiency of calcium can lead to the familiar muscle cramps, and according to Dr L. W. Cromwell in his report to the Gerontological Society of San Francisco, calcium deficiency among his patients has been found to be a cause of arthritic crippling.
The regular consumption of bone meal tablets (obtainable at health stores), combined with a healthy diet can help to prevent or eliminate muscle cramp and also to prevent or correct the crumbling or brittleness of the bones (osteoporosis) so often associated with arthritis and with elderly people.
This is even more effective when taken in conjunction with wheat germ or vitamin E capsules. It is also more effective when taken along with vitamins A and D. In fact, vitamin D is not well absorbed into the body without it.

Sea Vegetables
The most easily obtained sea vegetable is kelp, a seaweed found in deep oceanic waters.
It is brought to the land, dried, and can be purchased in powder or tablet form at health food stores.
Kelp is one of the best natural sources of iodine, easily digested and assimilated because it is combined with other compatible minerals, vitamins, trace elements, etc.
The elements contained in kelp are in the exact proportions needed by the human blood stream. Incidentally, as in the case of the B vitamins, a lack of iodine in the diet can adversely affect the vision.
"Iodine, since it has to do with increasing anti-bacterial elements in the blood, is of value in every type of rheumatic disease."

Minerals
Minerals are equally important to the health of the body as the vitamins.
There are numerous minerals and trace elements required for maximum health but certain subÂstances are so rich in them, balanced and mixed together in a way in which they can be assimilated by the body, that they deserve special mention.
